Spring Carnival!

Spring Carnival Planning Committee
Our Spring Carnival is nearly upon us and the plans are in full force. This year our Carnival and Silent Auction will be held Saturday, May 5th from 2:00 -6:00 PM. Information on the event can be found on our PTA website, www.winterpockpta.com and flyers will go home tomorrow.
You may purchase tickets in advance and take advantage of these cool incentives

As always you may also purchase tickets on the day of the Carnival for 50 cents each.

All parents are welcome and there is still lots for you to help out with. We would love to involve any and all parents so don’t be shy if you’ve never planned a Carnival before. Wednesday, 4-18-12

Tomorrow the new HRP reading is due.  Even though your child may not have completed a book they should note what has been read for this past week on their new log sheet.  I will be collecting them each week to keep students on track.  They should be reading 2 classics before reading a series.

Friday is our field trip to Busch Gardens.  A few reminders:
-Be at school by 8:15
-Clear water bottles and "non-sticky" snacks are allowed for the bus ride.
-NO CELL PHONES!
-Money is needed for lunches.
-Camera or paper needed for picture journal.
-Plan to leave backpacks at home.  Students and parents will not be permitted back into the building when we return from the trip.

Week of 4/2-4/5

Friday is a teacher's work day.  No school for students!  The marking period ends on Thursday.  Report cards will be issued on April 28.

We have a STEPP lesson this week.

Latin projects are due tomorrow.  Students were to research a god and have some type of prop to signify that particular god.

Reading-We will read a mystery and decide who is quilty!  New HRPs will be assigned on Thursday.  be prepared to read unabridged classics!

Writing-a benchmark writing and writing to accompany the mystery will occur this week.  A goal letter out lining what your child would like to accomplish before leaving elementary school is due on Wednesday.

Word study- none this week.

Science-Quiz on sound scheduled for Monday.  We will explore sound with animals and begin looking at musical instruments.

Math-Fractions continue.  Please spend time working on weekly math reviews during our morning.  Problem solver is due on Wednesday.  Logic puzzle due on Wednesday too.

Week of 3/26-3/30

Our class came in third place in the BOXTOP competition.  The students will enjoy a Pizza Lunch on Friday to celebrate.  We will be eating in the classroom!

BOB competition begins on Tuesday, 3/27 and continues 3/28, and 3/29.  Competition begins at 8:45 and concludes at 9:45 each day.

Tuesday, we will be taking the field-tested multiple-choice writing test after the BOB competition.

Mrs. Malcolm's and Mrs. Compton's classes will present their Thomas Edison projects this week.

Reading-This is the last week for HRP letters!  The 4th marking period HRP will be introduced next week.  We will take a one week break from HRPs.  In class, the students will finish reading The Cay.
A journal will be completed and submitted for a grade on Friday, 3/30.  On Friday, students will be given a concluding test.  They will be allowed to use their books.

Writing- Poetry and mystery writing will be our focus this week.

Word study-A new list will be given on Monday with an assessment on Friday.

Science-Sound lessons continue.

Math- Fractions: subtracting, LCM, and improper fractions.

SS-World War 2.

Week of March 19-23

Hobby Fair is Friday, March 23 from 8:30-10:30.  Please plan on attending to see the many hobbies enjoyed by our fifth graders.  Students may arrive at school as early as 8am to set up.  Please plan how their display will make it home.

I will be out Monday-Wednesday.  I have the same substitute covering the class while I travel to visit my mother in NJ.  My 83 year old mother fell and broke her foot so I want to spend some time with her.  Thank you for your understanding!  The children will be in good hands with Mrs. Renee Douglas!

Reading-HRP letter is due on Thursday.  Counting this week, there are only two weeks left!  In class, the students are reading The Cay and keeping a journal.  They will receive a handout on Wednesday that is due on Friday.

Writing-Students will be writing a "formula" poem this week.

Word study-list provided on Monday with assessment on Friday.

Math-Fractions!  Students need to continue practicing changing improper fractions to mixed numbers.

Science-Our study of SOUND begins this week with two labs.  This unit is very hands-on and the children should enjoy making waves and using tuning forks.  Labs will be graded.

Social Studies-World War 2.

Monday, 3/5/12

School is closed today, but SOL testing will still begin tomorrow!  Tuesday is the multiple choice test, while Wednesday is the prompt day.

T-dap forms!  Please complete and return forms ASAP!  If your child has already receive their shot please send in paperwork so that the county nurse can file it.  Thank you!

Hobby Fair is Friday, 3/23!  Please plan to attend.  We will send home information later this week so you may plan.

Reading-HRP letter due on Thursday, 3/8.  I will begin a new read aloud.  Students will be assigned a new novel later in the week.  Thomas Edison Biography is actually due today.  Students will present projects on Tuesday, 3/6.

Writing- SOL tests!  We will work on limericks in class.  Hobby fair interview, typed, and completed by 3/14.  Posters are due on 3/19.

Word study-we will not have a list this week due to SOL testing.

Math-geometry, reviews, division, and decimals are the focus.

Social studies-World War 1.

Science- Geology test on Thursday!  Thomas Edison book and project was due today.  Projects will be presented on Tuesday.  Our study of sound begins by the end of the week.

Monday, 2-27-12

Reading-HRP letter due on Thursday.  Festival is on Friday.  Students will be eating in the class.

Writing-SOL information will be coming home on Thursday.  The multiple choice test has been moved to Tuesday, March 6.  The prompt will be given on Wednesday, March 7.  Hobby fair due dates:  Powers and Pitfalls due Friday, March 2, Poster due, March 19, Interview due March 14.

Math-Practice 10.4 due tomorrow.

Science- Tomorrow we will be working with Moh's scale and testing minerals for hardness.  Students will receive a homework assignment to read and answer questions.  It is due on Thursday.  Unit test on Geology is March 7.

SS-Study of World War 1 begins later this week.

Friday, 2-24-12

Permission slips for our April 20th field trip to Busch Gardens went home yesterday!  Money is due by March 12.  The cost is $43.25 per person.  Please carefully read the papers that were sent home.  If you have any questions please contact me.

Reading-HRP letter due on Thursday.  Our in-class Festival in celebration of The Mistmantle Chronicles is this Friday, March 2.  Students will be eating in class but can still purchase lunch from the cafeteria.  The biography of Thomas Edison and its project are due on March 5.  The biography will count towards the HRP.  This project will receive both a reading grade and a science grade.

Writing-The SOLs for writing are March 5, 6, and 7.  Please allow for plenty of rest and breakfast.  We will be looking at past prompts and discussing strategies for writing.  Hobby Fair Poster is due on March 19, Interview is due on March 14.  Both the poster and Interview should be completed at home.

Word study-a new list will be given on Monday with an assessment on Friday.

Math-Rates and Ratios are being learned.  Though students may be given formulas to find the area and circumference of circles we are expecting them to learn them!  Review will continue to keep every concept present!

Science-Volcanos, Mohs scale, and review. Unit test on Geology is scheduled for Wednesday, 3/7.

SS-Test on Industrial Revolution is Monday.  Notes must be completed in notebook as well.  World War 1 will be presented.

Week of 2/13-2/ 17

Happy Valentine's Day!  Students may exchange VValentine's in our room only, but they must bring one for everyone.  They will exchange valentines before recess.

Report cards should be reviewed and one copy returned with a signature and envelope by Wednesday.

Reading-HRP letter to assigned student due on Thursday.  Mistmantle should be completed for today, Monday.  Student will have a test tomorrow on the novel and on Literary Elements.

Writing-Expository pieces are being completed in class for the Hobby Fair.  Information about the poster was provided last week.  The poster is to be completed at home.  This week we will discuss the interview and complete Powers and Pitfalls.

Word study- a new list will be assigned today with daily assignments expected and a test on Friday.

Science- Students will have reading homework this week.  Look for two, 2-sided handouts.  We are studying the rock cycle.  Finally, I will assign the biography of Thomas Edison, on Thursday.

SS-Industrial Revolution will be discussed.

Math-area, circles, perimeter, and area of irregular figures.  Assessment on Thursday.

Tuesday, 2/7-Friday, 2/10

I'm late!  here's is what the remainder of the week holds:

SCA Lollipop Sales through Friday. $1 per pop.

Friday is STORE!!!  With your permission, students may sell gently used items, baked goods, or offer a service to their fellow classmates. 1:45-2:15pm on Friday.

Book Fair begins on Thursday evening.  Our class will visit the display on Friday during the regular library class.

Reading-Students will meet in literature circles to discuss The Mistmantle Chronicles and continue working on the assignment for the spring festival.  We will finish reading this delightful novel next week.  HRP letters and my expectations will be reviewed with a new letter due on Thursday.  Students have been assigned a classmate whom they are to write.

Writing-Expository rough drafts should be completed by Friday with all writing done in class.  Friday will be an All-Write Day to practice for the upcoming SOL writing test.

Word study- a new list was given on Monday again with a concentration on Greek and Latin elements.  Daily assignments should be completed by Friday.  Test on Friday.

Science- Our study of Geology has begun.  History of the Earth and layers of the Earth will be covered this week.  2-sided homework page is assigned on Wednesday and due next Monday.

SS-French Revolution test on Thursday.

Math-Circles!!!!  Area, circumference, pi!!!!  Can you remember the formulas? :)

Week of January 31-February 3

Reading Benchmark will be administered on Friday.

This week's assignments:
Reading-The new HRP was assigned last Thursday. Students are choosing books from a "blizzard of good books".   This marking period students have multiple genres from which to pick, including biographies (Thomas Edison's will be assigned and counted as an HRP), Winter-themes, Whoppers(350 pages or more), Non-fiction, Historical fiction, and Animal allegories.  On Thursday students should have a letter written that answers one of the questions posed on the sheet they received last Thursday.  They will receive a log sheet similar to what they had last marking period on which they will log all the books they read.
In class, we are reading The Mistmantle Chronicles and working on tasks that mirror our multiple intelligences.  By Friday, students should have read through the end of chapter 19 and complete the role assigned from their literature circle.

Writing-Expository piece will be started based on the hobby your child is showcasing in our annual Hobby Fair.

Word Study-a new list was provided on Friday of last week.  We continue learning about Greek and Latin prefixes and roots.  Test on Friday.

Math- Tessellations were assigned for Hobby Fair.  The study of Geometry continues along with review for next week's math benchmark.

Science-Our study of the Ocean concludes on Monday, 2/6 when the plot of the ocean floor is due.  Zone circles are due on Friday, 2/3.  Our study of geology begins on Monday, 2/6.

Social Studies-The French Revolution is discussed.

Week of January 23-27

German Feast, 1:30pm in the cafeteria on Monday.

SCA speeches and elections on Wednesday.

3 hour early release on Wednesday.

Treasure Chest on Friday.

Wolfmart on Friday.

The 2nd marking period ends on Friday!

Reading-There is NO HRP assignment this week!  The new marking period HRP program will be assigned on Thursday.  In the mean time, students should be reading The Mistmantle Chronicles to the assigned page.  Reading responses will be written and students will meet in Literature Circles to discuss.   The biography of Thomas Edison will be assigned, for HRPs, on Thursday.  Students will have 2 weeks to complete this book.

Writing-Hobby Fair Personal Narrative will be evaluated and published copies started for next Tuesday's due date.  All writing should be done in class.

Word Study-A new list will be given on FRIDAY for next week.  There will not be a list for this week.

Science-We will learn about tides, The Gulf Stream and begin researching the zones of the ocean.  Students will be assigned one of three zones, choose a creature and produce a colorful, fact-filled circle about both.  This may end up needing to be completed at home if your child is unable to finish it within the allotted time.  The zone circle is due next week on Wednesday, February 1.

SS-Medieval Test is on Tuesday!

Math-Several students are still struggling with word problems that involve decimals. Mrs. Compton has retested students and will work with those in need of additional practice.  Geometry moves forward as well.

Week of January 17-20

Thank you all for your contributions and support of our very successful Medieval Faire!  Your children out did themselves in their efforts!  I hope you had a chance to hear about the fun that was had by all!

Our Field Trip to Agecroft Hall is this Wednesday, the 18th!  Students need to bring a bagged lunch with a drink.  We will be eating in the classroom when we return to school from the trip.  No electronic devices are allowed!

This week:
Reading-Urchin of The Riding Stars, book one in The Mistmantle Chronicles, was assigned last week.  This animal allegory will take our class on a journey of mystery, intrique, and strong character attributes.  We will focus on literary elements in our reading.  Our last HRP of the marking period is due on Thursday.  Next Friday, the 27th students will choose keys to see who will  unlock the treasure chest!

Writing-Hobby Fair narratives have been started.  Students are focusing on openings, closings, avoiding misspelled words, double negatives, and run-on sentences.

Word study-We assess last week's words on Tuesday, the 17.  The new list will be assessed on Friday, the 20th.

Math- Assessment on Thursday.  Geometry is the focus with a concentration on triangles and quadrilaterals.

Science-The question of why the ocean is salty will be answered this week.  We will also learn about tides and the Gulf Stream.  Quiz on the Ocean floor is on Tuesday.

Social Studies-Background knowledge will be built about World War 1.  Medieval Test is next week.

Jan. 9-13

**HOBBY FAIR IS STARTING!!!  Be on the look out for paperwork about the annual 5th grade Hobby Fair.  Students will be writing, creating, and planning for the fair which will take place on March 23.

**SCA, Student Council Association, begins its kickoff on Tuesday!

Medieval Fair is Friday, January 13!

Reading- HRPs are due on Thursday.  Including this week, there is only 2 weeks left to read books for this marking period.  Our Treasure Chest will be "opened" on January 27!

Writing-narratives will be started that involves your child's hobby.  Mini-lessons will be given on closings.

Word study-We continue learning words with Greek and Latin prefixes.  Follow the weekly assignments and prepare for a test on Friday.

Science-Our study of Oceanography begins on Tuesday!  Students will need salt dough and a shoe box for Thursday to construct the ocean floor.  Students have partnered for this assignment.

SS-Coat of Arms is due on MONDAY!!!

Happy New Year!

A few notes for the week:

Science- Project runway scripts and costumes are needed for Wednesday.  I am collecting scripts!  Costumes can be as simple as a colored t-shirt with items taped to it.  There is a unit test on organisms on Friday.  The test will cover the needs and characteristics of organisms, the classification system, and the 5 kingdoms.  Students should use their notes, kingdom booklet, and handouts to study from.  I will collect the kingdom booklets on Friday.

Word study-I gave all students a list of words with Greek and Latin prefixes.  For the remainder of the year I would like to concentrate on these type of words.  Please have your child follow the menu for assignments posted in the yellow word study note book.
